Implex Shoots Video of the 2007 Antarctica Marathon

Minneapolis, MN., February 28, 2007.

Running an Antarctica marathon is quite a feat — and so is getting digital video out of there so the rest of the world can see it. That was the challenge that Capella University, an accredited, fully online university asked of Implex.

There are several technical hurdles that had to be overcome. Our very own CEO - Stuart DeVaan devised a method to accomplish this - courtesy of some whiz-bang tech equipment that he brought to Antarctica, as well as a satellite recently placed in orbit.

Stuart needed to ensure three, broadcast-quality, 90-second video sequences could show the highlights of the big Antarctic Marathon. Here's what he did:

1) The marathon footage was loaded on laptops and edited so that the clips are of a manageable size. 2) The clips were zapped from a portable Internet terminal to a recently launched Inmarsat satellite and down the Netherlands and back to Minneapolis. 3) Staffers at Implex "re-rendered" the video into a higher-quality, broadcast state. 4) Finally, the video was zinged to New York and made available for global distribution via satellite to the likes of ESPN and CNN.

Whew.

This is notable, Capella University spokeswoman Irene Silber says, because nothing like this has been attempted in past Antarctica races. In fact, adds DeVaan, it was technically impossible until a few months ago because the satellite, run by the English company Inmarsat, wasn't available.

So did it all work? Worked like a charm and the Implex footage was broadcast arouond the world!

This year's winners were Christina Harding, 31, of Weston, Massachusetts, who won the women's division with a time of four hours, 54 minutes and 33 seconds and Matthew Tyler of Victoria, British Columbia, won the men's division in 3:51:33.
